| Environmental quality and economic growth are critical 21st-century challenges, especially for developing economies. Rising greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from industrialization, energy consumption, and land-use changes intensify global climate concerns. While economic growth is crucial for development, its environmental impact, particularly pollution, complicates policy formulation. This study investigates the asymmetric effects of economic growth on carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions in Iran and a selected group of Middle Eastern and North African (MENA) countries over the period 1985–2020. To meticulously analyze these intricate relationships, advanced econometric methodologies, including the nonlinear autoregressive distributed lag (NARDL) model for time-series analysis in Iran and the panel NARDL model for the selected countries, were employed. Key findings reveal that, in both Iran and the selected MENA economies, positive shocks to economic growth (expansion) are associated with reductions in CO2 emissions, whereas negative shocks (contraction) lead to increases in emissions. These results underscore the presence of asymmetric impacts, where the environmental consequences differ significantly between periods of economic expansion and contraction. Furthermore, the study confirms that escalating energy consumption substantially drives up CO2 emissions, while a decrease in energy consumption correlates with reduced emissions. By providing empirical evidence for the MENA region and Iran, this research contributes to a deeper understanding of the nexus between economic growth, energy consumption, and environmental degradation, thereby informing the development of more sustainable environmental policies. | ||
